Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology
BREEAM, which stands for Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method, is a widely used environmental assessment method for buildings. It was first developed by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) in the United Kingdom in 1990 and has since become one of the leading sustainability assessment methods globally.
BREEAM assesses the sustainability performance of buildings across various categories such as energy use, water consumption, materials, pollution, land use, ecology, and management processes. It provides a framework for designers, developers, and building owners to measure and mitigate the environmental impacts of their buildings throughout the entire lifecycle, from design and construction to operation and maintenance.
The assessment process involves rating the performance of a building against a set of criteria, with ratings ranging from Pass, Good, Very Good, Excellent, and Outstanding. BREEAM aims to promote sustainable building practices, reduce environmental impacts, improve occupant health and well-being, and drive innovation in the construction industry.
