Certificate of Occupancy

A Certificate of Occupancy (COO) is a document obtained through local government, usually a city building or planning department, that serves as proof that the subject property is conformant with local codes and suitable for occupancy. COOS, and the processes by which they are obtained, vary somewhat between municipalities, but are commonly required upon completion of new construction (or significant renovations), when a property changes ownership, or when a property changes use.
