Percolation Testing

Percolation Testing also known as Borehole Percolation or Permeameter Testing – Percolation testing is a test which measures the infiltration of water in a test excavation both vertically and laterally. This can be done in an open hole partially filled with gravel or with a temporary well set in gravel. As in the infiltration testing, the hole should be pre-soaked to reach a saturated condition. Once saturated, the test boring should be filled to appropriate levels and the height of water should be measured at regular intervals with the time carefully recorded. The water level should remain relatively constant during the testing. This can be used for design of septic systems or stormwater systems, including dry wells. Specific techniques vary widely by city, county, and state.
